Listening to songs written about me makes all the emotions become fresh again.
James 4:7 is a well-worn Bible verse: “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
As I was thinking about that verse tonight, I realized that that’s so opposite the character of God:
Even when we resist God, He still pursues us.
He pursues us so passionately that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. [Romans 5:8]
He has so much compassion for us that even though we were actively running from Him, He still spent three days in the depths of hell in order to demonstrate His love for me.
Why would I choose anyone else?
Today I’m choosing to reach for the hem of the robe of the One who has plans to prosper me and not to harm me.
Your deepest, darkest sins and your shameful secrets are simply irrelevant when it comes to the counterintuitive, ecstatic announcement of the gospel.
—Rob Bell, Love Wins
Don’t even worry about it; it’s just a classic tale of unrequited love.
There have been weird things happening in my life lately.
Like, really weird.
Things like a car spontaneously catching fire in the garage of a close family friend’s house and setting the house on fire.
Things like a strange man appearing out of literally nowhere with a coat hanger to help me unlock my car when I locked my keys in there.
Things like a middle eastern man ripping up all my money and throwing it in the trash.
Things like finding a $50 bill in my glasses case.
When a series of strange events like this happens, I can’t help but think that God is wanting to get my attention. He wants to tell me something, but I’m not sure what.
I don’t know how to have a relationship with God anymore. How do I listen? How do I pray? Somehow along the way, I’ve lost these skills. How can I know what He’s trying to get through to me via these weird occurrences if I don’t even know how to perceive Him?

a series of emails between a church worship leader and me
- worship leader: Hey Kelsi-so great to talk with you yesterday. Is it OK to schedule you for piano this coming Sunday Nov. 27?
- me: Sounds good to me!
- worship leader: Cool-that's great Kelsi. We will meet at 7:30 a.m. in the auditorium. I will communicate more with you through the week. We are doing excerpts from the Berlioz Requiem for A Nashville Girl, and the Stravinsky Polonaise on Wild Thing. More info coming.
- me: Those are great selections for the discerning musical audience at Madison Park…
- worship leader: Thanks Kelsi- I truly feel the anointing is upon me. And I remembered that you have played the piano reductions for these scores previously. We will likely transpose them up a tritone.
- me: Not a tritone!! That's the devil's interval!
